Your First Love

Do you remember your first love? I'm not talking about your first kiss, or your first... ahem... never mind. I'm talking about your first, can't-stop-thinking-about, can't-imagine-living-without, true to your heart, love. I'll give you a moment to recall that one person or persons you still think about every now and then. Got him/her? Great, moving on...

I had three great loves. I met my first love in seventh grade (yes, I know) and he was utterly perfect in every way. I'll call him 'T' to protect his privacy, just in case there are several out there who know him. I was over the moon for him. So much, in fact, that I gave myself a homemade tattoo (not my brightest move) of his name. We started "going" together and stayed together until he moved away the summer before we went into the ninth grade. I was devastated and swore I'd never love again. It just hurt too much. When you are only fifteen and have your heart ripped out for the first time, you literally believe your world is crashing in around you. I cried that entire summer.

And then I met 'M' as a senior in high school. 'M' was an older man--okay, so he graduated before me, but still--and I fell hard. 'M' and I worked together and immediately hit it off. He pursued me and I have to admit, a girl likes the attention. Eventually I said yes to a date, and BOOM! I was a goner. We moved in together after high school and I thought it couldn't get any better. We were in love, blissfully happy, playing house, etc... 'M' was my first grown-up love, my first at making love, and my first at so many other things. To an eighteen-year-old, when you find that one love, you are positive you don't need anything else. Even as things started to fall apart between us, I refused to believe it. We were perfect for each other, so how could he possibly not love me any longer?

'M' revealed his true colors on my nineteenth birthday. I came home from work fully expecting him there with flowers, or dinner made, or something. He wasn't even there. I called his friend, who told me 'M' was there, but didn't want to talk to me, that he just wanted a night away from me. On my birthday. Okay, I thought, everyone needs space. I went to my parents' house, but they were out. I was alone on my birthday and miserable as I drove back to my ignorantly blissful life with 'M'. He was home when I returned and said those four words no one wants to hear. "We need to talk." He then proceeded to inform me that I was loud, obnoxious, immature, and that he didn't like the fact that my jeans were starting to get tight. "You need to work out more. I don't want you getting fat." Well, well, well. He didn't want me to get fat. He didn't like me. What he loved about me in the beginning (You are so fun! I love that you aren't afraid to be yourself.) now irritated him. I was broken. Completely, no holds barred, broken.

It took me time to stop crying over 'M'. I told myself I wouldn't cry over another man. Screw it. It wasn't worth it. I didn't need love. I was a strong, independent woman. I'd go back to school, get a fabulous degree, and never look back...

And then I met 'D'. Oh, did I meet 'D'. I didn't just meet him. I was blown away by him. I'd never seen a man look so good in Wranglers and cowboy boots. He raced jeeps off road, he love to dance like a fool, and didn't have any problem being the same person in public as he was in private. Having been burned before, I was leery of getting involved in another relationship, but the heart wants what it wants. I fell in love with 'D'. He drove me crazy, both in a good and bad way. Spending one day with 'D' blew the socks off all the time I spent with 'M' or 'T'. I realize now that the feelings I had for 'T' or 'M' pale in comparison to the feelings I have for 'D'.

I'm still with 'D', after eighteen years, and he still gives me delicious chills when he comes up behind me and nuzzles my neck. I still get butterflies when I see him. We still cuddle, kiss (which totally grosses out the kids!), and are really, truly in love. He is the inspiration for all the heroes in my stories. Don't believe me? How much sex is too much?

Today I decided to blog about sex. How much is too much sex? Is that even possible? Based on the genre, the answer is both yes and no.

I write very blistering menages under the pen name of Eve Adams. It isn't unusual for sex to happen within the first two chapters. If it doesn't, the characters are at least imagining it happening. Are the first couple of chapters too soon to have your characters engage in sexual congress? No way. When a reader picks up a menage, they know they are going to get sex more than M/F, and they know they are going to get a lot of it. Have you ever read a tame menage? I didn't think so.

In Under the Covers, my heroine works in a "gentlemen's club" as a courtesan. My alpha hero is an undercover agent working the nightclub scene to seek out a killer. He sees her and BAM! He has to have her. They don't have sex right away, but they are definitely... ahem... hands on by chapter two. When the beta hero makes his appearance, the three of them really crank up the heat. None of them knew each other before meeting in the club, so I didn't want them just jumping into the sack. However, she is working as a courtesan and there is an expectation that she will perform. Believe you me, she doesn't disappoint. Over. And over. And over.

Riding Double takes a different approach. The heroine already knows both her heroes. She's a wildcat who loves to raise hell. The very first scene she starts a bar fight with the hero, just to turn her on. What results is HOT sex up against a...well, you get the idea. This is all by the end of chapter two. By the time they make it back to the ranch, where the other hero awaits, she's ready to pick another fight, just to turn her on again, and pull hero #2 into her wild game. Together, the two cowboys teach her how to ride double. Lots of sex, from start to finish.

I also write sizzling romantic suspense as Allie K. Adams. Although the sex isn't any less hot than my menages, it is strictly between a man and woman, and the story builds up to the actual deed.

In At Any Cost, the heroine is a rookie agent desperate to prove to her idol that she has what it takes to be part of the elite team. Her idol is a seasoned agent who not only thinks she'd be better off working at McDonalds, he doesn't trust her any further than he can throw her. The only problem is, he also thinks she's the funniest, sexiest agent he's ever seen and can't help but fall in love with her. It makes for great tension the entire story watching these two deny their feelings while at the same time saving the world. They save the actual act until midway through the book. There four sex scenes in the entire book because it isn't the focus of the book.

Seek and Destroy is the second in the series. The hero and heroine still must save the world (it is, after all, romantic suspense), but instead of them working for the same agency as the agents did in the first book, they work for rivaling agencies that form an unlikely alliance to catch a madman before he strikes again. The agents try to out do each other the entire book. It also makes for great tension watching them work through their issues. These two agents end up in the sack sooner than later, and keep the heat going throughout the entire book. Still, sex isn't the focus of the book.

That's what really sets stories apart. Is it sex for the sake of sex? Romantica? Menage? You expect to read graphic, explicit sex scenes when you read erotica. You don't when you read mainstream. If you picked up a mainstream story and it was sex, sex, and more sex, you'd probably be disappointed. Same goes for erotica. If you pick up an erotica story and there were maybe two sex scenes in the entire book, you'd probably throw the damn thing across the room.

When you pick up a book by Allie K. Adams, you know it is going to be a hot romantic suspense between a man and a woman. It is more mainstream, less sex, but not at all light on the sexual tension. When you read Eve Adams, you are assured the menage stories will be hot, will have multiple partners, and will be full of sex.

It's all about the genre.

Let's have a party!

It's Cinco De Mayo!!! What better reason to have a party where we don't have to dye the Chicago River green?

Do you know the origin of Cinco De Mayo?

Most get this wrong. It isn't the Mexican Independence Day. That is September 16th. No, the 5th of May is in celebration of the victory of Mexican soldiers defeating the French forces in 1862. The Mexican soldiers were outnumbers 2 to 1 and they still defeated the French. The moral of this story? Never underestimate the underdog!

In celebration of the underdog, I'm having a fiesta tonight at my house. I thought, why not have a virtual fiesta here? So let's do it! Do you have a yummy recipe to share? I'm making fajitas for dinner and you're all invited! We'll be doing tequila shots (ooohhh Wendi Darlin??? Where are you?) and I'm sure it will get a little wild (stay off the tables, ladies and gents, until after dark so the neighbors don't talk).

I say we start off with a Mexican Coffee (recipe follows) as I know those are Jami Davenport's fav. This recipe leaves out the most important ingredient--TEQUILA! But you can add yours to taste... Here's to everyone here! Salud!!!

3/4 cup ground dark roast coffee (regular or decaffeinated)
2 teaspoons McCormick® Cinnamon, Ground

It ain't easy being green...

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I decided to blog on what it means to be green. Sure, we can all wear green, drink green beer, and even swim in the green Chicago River (though I wouldn't recommend it) on St. Patrick's Day. But what does it mean to be green?

When I decided to sell to an e-publisher instead of a traditional NY publisher, the decision wasn't made lightly. I've always had the dream of walking into a bookstore and seeing my books on the shelves. It is the dream of any writer.

So I started doing my research on traditional NY houses. I learned about advances, which thrilled me. Being paid upfront for work not even out, yet? Where do I sign! But then I learned about returns, and print runs, and all that goes along with that. I was shocked. Traditional publishers print a run of several thousand books right out of the gate with no guarantee even one will sell. This not only ties up a heck of a lot of money in overhead, it also wastes valuable resources (paper, chemicals, time, etc.). If the books don't sell, we now have several thousand books in a landfill somewhere. That's right. They just toss them out.

Are ya kiddin me? In this day of the digital age it just doesn't make much sense to me, which is why I turned to e-publishing. It made more sense, and is the more Earth-friendly approach.

An e-publisher has an online bookstore. All of their books are available on demand, downloadable immediately after purchase. No paper necessary. No landfills involved if the book doesn't sell well. And, if you're lucky enough, your book still goes to print, just in a much greener way. I say it's about time we take a closer look at how we can all be green...

There is a new trend sweeping the publishing industry. Well, actually it isn't new at all. It's been around for some time, but it's just now catching on (finally)! It's called Print On Demand, or POD.

Print On Demand with digital technology is used as a way of printing items on demand. In other words, unlike a traditional print run publisher, POD will only print the book when it has been ordered. POD has many benefits. Some of them are:
· You can still order books that otherwise would have been out of print and no longer available. As long as that book is in digital format, it will always be available.
· Large inventories of a book or print material do not need to be kept in stock, reducing storage, handling costs, and inventory accounting costs.
· There is little or no waste from unsold products.
· POD advantages reduce the risks associated with publishing books and prints and can lead to increased choices for consumers.

I'm doing my part at being green, or at least trying. I still eat off paper plates, use paper towels, and forget to turn the light off as I leave the room. Still, every little bit helps. I'm not going to chain myself to a tree to show my "greener" side, but by choosing an Earth-friendly publisher and buying e-books to read on my e-reader, I am showing that I at least do have one.

What is erotic romance? How about erotica?

No purple prose here. No suggestive words at what they are doing behind closed doors. Not even a hint. When you write erotic romance/erotica, you leave nothing to the imagination. Everything is spelled out in black and white for the reader to see.

I write HOT erotic adventure/suspense. I also write erotica under the pen name Eve Adams. It's hard to write in a genre my twelve and sixteen year olds can't read (because I won't let them for obvious reasons). My husband LOVES to read them (again, for obvious reasons)!

When I sold my first book AT ANY COST back in March 2008, it was really more of a mainstream romance. There were love scenes, but they were mild at best. My publisher asked me to "steam" them up as hotter romances always sell better. So I did. I never knew I'd have such a great time writing that HOT. Now that I've given in to the "dark side" of romance, I'm never turning back. I absolutely love writing HOT romance. Take a look at SEEK AND DESTROY and you'll see what I mean. My first NASSD Counter-terrorist Agency book was hot, but the second one catches fire!

Erotic romance/erotica isn't for everyone. There are terms in the books that would stop the heart if the reader is offended by explicit words. The graphic love scenes are meant to stimulate the senses. If that is not what you like to read, then stay clear of erotic romance/erotica.

I'd like to delve deeper into what erotic romance/erotica is and what it isn't. It isn't pornography, much to the contrary of those advocating against the genre. It isn't stories exploiting woman (or men). It is a genre centered around the relationships of the characters--their trials and tribulations, their conflict and resolution. Romance is the central theme. It is the pursuit of the proverbial HEA, aka Happily Ever After.

I love writing stories about characters who get into adventurous situations just to see how they'll get out of them. These characters play hard, love even harder, and never back away from what is the right thing to do. All of my books have the same thing in common: they all have the HEA.

If you are curious about erotic romance/erotica, I urge you to pick up a story and read it. Who knows, you may fall in love with the genre and find yourself a lifelong fan. All it takes is that first taste of the "dark side" and you'll be hooked. :-)

Below is the story excerpt for AT ANY COST. This excerpt gives you a little taste of the dangers the characters are up against.

Dan and Snyder were quieter than church mice. They'd taken the guards out before they could call in. It didn't make any sense.

His answer came then, and Dan cursed through clenched teeth. Goddamn that woman. If they made it out of here alive, he was going to kill her.

JT Turner, dressed in all black, raced toward him. She had a mask over her face, but he knew her body well enough to know who it was.

Not again.

She had quite a crew after her this time. She skidded to a stop the minute she realized who it was. "Dan?" He thrust an UZI into her hands. "Guns? How did you get these? I thought we were unarmed? At least I was."

"Not now, Turner." He fired into the crowd chasing her, dropping the first layer. "Did you get him?"

"No." JT fired and took out two more.

"Move it." He pushed her behind him. "There's a hole under the fence dead ahead. Slide under and keep going until you see the car. Get in and get down."

"But I can still take him!"

"Too late, Turner. Now move." She ran off toward the fence. Dan followed, every few seconds turning and firing, taking out another layer. But they just kept coming.

Dan made it to the hole and slid under. He noticed a piece of fabric with blood on it. Knowing it wasn't his, he growled. She couldn't even slide under a fence without hurting herself.

Racing toward the car, he almost collided with Snyder as he appeared from behind some trees. They both sprinted toward the car. Snyder didn't even pause when he spotted JT Turner behind the wheel, motioning for them to hurry up.

Dan jumped in the passenger seat, Snyder in the back.

"Haul ass!" Dan yelled.

"I'm hauling," JT sang, and he wanted to wring that defiant little neck of hers. She drove fast, but not fast enough. Dan saw lights behind them. SUVs. ATVs. And whatever else the tango had at his beck and call.

And they were gaining on them.

"Move over, Turner. I'm taking the wheel." He grabbed the wheel and positioned himself to take over. She threw the seat back and rolled out of the way, while at the same time Dan jumped into the seat.

He picked up the pace and the lights in his rearview mirror started to fade. "Fire off some cover, would you?"

"My pleasure." JT crawled over the back of her seat and landed ungracefully on top of Snyder. Dan watched in the mirror as Snyder helped her up. The way he touched her, smiled at her, made Dan tense. "Thanks." She offered.

"Any time," Snyder, too easy and too damned charming, replied. Dan clenched his teeth. "Hey, Weber? Flip that little purple toggle switch."

Dan did and the back window lowered down. "Nice option."

JT popped her head up and rested the UZI on the back dash. Firing behind them, she must have hit some of them. Lights visibly swerved, and one flipped into the air.

That's my girl. Dan drove faster, narrowly missing trees and vines as he navigated the jungle. JT fired off another volley of shots, this time not aiming for anything in particular. The woman just liked to shoot.

"I think I got 'em all." JT slid back down into the seat.

"Think again." Dan spotted another set of lights as they crested the horizon. "Snyder, take 'em out."

"I can do it." JT glared up at Dan through the mirror. He glared back with equal fury. Just wait, Turner. You think I'm pissed now, wait until we get back to the hotel.

"Allow me." Snyder capped the driver of their tail. The lights slid off into the bushes and stopped.

"Very nice," JT offered.

"Thank you," Snyder replied with a nod. He sat back and gave JT a sideways glance.

"You must be the lovely Miss Turner."

"I must be," JT replied. Dan looked behind them. No more lights. They were in the clear. "And you are?"

"David Snyder, NASSD." He offered his hand. When JT accepted it, he kissed her fingers. Dan jerked the wheel and knocked them off-balance. JT pulled her hand back to find purchase against the seat.

"I was doing fine until you two showed up."

"Obviously," Dan ground out.

"Let me guess," Snyder said after several seconds of intense silence. "Weber didn't tell you about this?"

"No," she said way too sweetly and forced a smile. He looked at her through the rearview mirror. She looked ready to jump over the seat and take him out with her bare hands. "He must have forgotten to mention it."

"Did you get him?" Snyder asked JT.

"No," Dan choked out. Again his anger singed the corners of his control. He shook his head and muttered a round of his favorite curses. Twice.

"So now we are back to Plan A?" Snyder asked.

Dan swung his angry gaze over to her through the mirror. She'd botched the mission. Blew the fucking op. Damn it all to Hell! If he could, he'd throw her on the next plane out of Colombia and go after the tango himself.

But HQ wanted it done their way. Hell and brimstone. He debated whether going against a direct order and sending her home anyway. Yes, it would be his final mission, because as soon as HQ found out Dan went with his own plan, his career would be over.

He could always go along with HQ's ridiculous plan. JT would go into the compound and work the tango from the inside. Dan would work the mission with Snyder from the outside. It could work, Dan finally admitted, with a few modifications.

The only way to keep an eye on her was to keep her in the mission. Son-of-a-bitch. He didn't want her there, didn't want her going into the compound unarmed and alone.

But it was the only way.

What is Print On Demand (POD)?

There is a new trend sweeping the publishing industry. Well, actually it isn't new at all. It's been around for some time, but it's just now catching on (finally)! It's called Print On Demand, or POD.

First, let's talk about what POD is NOT. It is not vanity publishing as some would have you believe. Vanity publishing, or self-publishing, is when you take your material, complete your own line edits, find your own printer, print and bind your own books, and sell them yourself. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with self-publishing. I just want to provide the distinction between vanity publishing and POD.

Print on demand with digital technology is used as a way of printing items on demand. In other words, unlike a traditional print run publisher, POD will only print the book when it has been ordered. Traditional publishers print a run of several thousand books right out of the gate with no guarantee even one will sell. This not only ties up a heck of a lot of money in overhead, it also wastes valuable resources (paper, chemicals, time, etc.). If the books don't sell, we now have several thousand books in a land fill somewhere. In this day and age of "green" and protecting our resources, POD really does stand out as the more Earth-friendly approach.

POD has many benefits. Some of them are:

You can still order books that otherwise would have been out of print and no longer available. As long as that book is in digital format, it will always be available.
Large inventories of a book or print material do not need to be kept in stock, reducing storage, handling costs, and inventory accounting costs.
There is little or no waste from unsold products.
POD advantages reduce the risks associated with publishing books and prints and can lead to increased choice for consumers.

So there you have it. I hope this helps you understand what POD is and why it is growing in popularity, and why I chose to go with a POD publisher. I'm not going to chain myself to a tree to show my "greener" side, but by choosing an Earth-friendly publisher like Siren-BookStrand, I am showing that I do have one.

I would love to hear what you think of this trailer as it is my first one and I want to make one for each of my books. If this totally blows, then I want to know so I don't turn around and make the same type of trailer for SEEK AND DESTROY. However, if you just love it, I'd like to hear that, too!

I guess even blogspots can get those chain letters/tags. This one looks fun so I'll jump in.

The rules: Tell seven random and/or interesting things about myself. Get five blog buddies to play, too and link to their blogs. Don't forget to post the rules.

1. I used to race jeeps offroad, which is where I met my husband. You pick out the jeep you like, then go after the man. He he he... I think he liked my jeep better.
2. My feet are insanely ticklish. I mean freakishly insanely ticklish. I've actually broken toes (my own) when being tickled because I ended up kicking something.
3. I'm a techie by trade and yet have to have my fifteen year old son show me how to use my Blackberry phone.
4. I love to bake in the sun. L-O-V-E it. However, being a redhead and extremely fair skinned, I usually turn into a lobster in no time and then spend the next week in pain, then another week itching from dead skin peeling off me in sheets.
5. My husband and I have been together for seventeen years, but we aren't actually married. We were married, got a divorce, and then got back together. We call each other "Spousal Units" or SUs. It fits, don't you think? We live in blissful sin! Ha!
6. My daughter is one of my best friends. THAT is saying something! She is eleven going on thirty, so let's see if we are still speaking when she turns all "teenager" on me! I know there will come a time when it just won't be cool to hang with mom, but until then I'm taking advantage of every second.
7. I love to remodel and/or build additions on houses. I'm in the process of purchasing a house right now. I plan to add on and will get started this summer. I'm TERRIBLE at interior design, so if you have any taste at all (I've been told my taste is all in my mouth), let me know and I'll be happy to pick your brain for ideas.

So there you have it--my seven factoids. As for my blog group, I don't think I know five people who have blogs. Instead, I'll post this now and as I find blogs out there, I'll post the URL here.

Finding your Happily Ever After (HEA)

There's been a lot of talk on my author's loop (Gawd, I love saying that! I actually have an author's loop) about romance books and whether or not they should have the proverbial HEA (Happily Ever After). In my opinion, all romance genre books should have the HEA. Here's why:

Years ago I read this book--I don't even remember the name--that not only did not have the HEA, the author killed off the heroine at the end of the book. I was so mad I actually threw the book across the room. I felt cheated. I spent all that time and energy reading that book only to have it end in tragedy! To me, if the hero and heroine do not end up together, that is a tragedy.

So, for those of you looking for your HEA, you can count on them in all of my books. I will never cheat any of my readers by having the book end in tragedy. Sure, they may get shot, thrown out of windows, beaten to a bloody pulp, etc... But they will ALWAYS end up together in the end.

After all, isn't that what HEAs are all about?

RESCUE ME picked up by BookStrand!!!

Well, when it happens it happens fast.

The Cover for AT ANY COST

So I'm on the phone with a client (I still work 40+ hours per week in IT until I can support myself with my writing) trying to be Ms. Professional when I receive an email from my publisher, BookStrand (www.bookstrand.com). It's my cover for AT ANY COST. Being my first cover EVER, I, of course, just about fell off my chair with excitement. Still attempting to remain Ms. Professional while trying not to hyperventilate and pass out, I finally ended the call just in time. I then screamed, causing my husband to run into my office to save me from whatever big bad thing had me cornered. My hero. I showed him my cover, which he replied with a single word--cool. I had to agree.

I FINALLY sold one! BookStrand offered to publish AT ANY COST. I'm thrilled.

This is my first in the series of the "National Agency of Safety, Security, and Defense" books. Stocked full of danger and intrigue, not to mention love and romance, these anti-terrorist stories will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The agents at NASSD will win over your heart all the while saving the world. Once I have my cover art, I'll post the real cover on the website.

They've also requested SEEK AND DESTROY, as well as IT TAKES TWO (once complete). I'm hoping they love all of them as much as they loved the first one! Keep your fingers crossed...
